Tackling undeclared work in Europe
Europe is winning the war on undeclared work.
A wide range of policy approaches and measures introduced in all EU Member States over the past five years have had a significant impact on preventing businesses and people from engaging in undeclared work, new research from Eurofound has found. It recorded an incremental decline in the size of the undeclared economy from the equivalent of 22.3% of GDP in 2003 to 18.4% by 2012, although there were large differences between countries.
The results of our study can be found on the website of Eurofound.
Peer Reviews on data driven analysis and evidence-based evaluation
Within the scope of the EC-programme ‘Evaluation of Labour Market Policies and Programmes’ peer review meetings are regularly organised. In these meetings policy officers and thematic experts from EU member states participate.
‘Data driven analysis’ was the subject of a peer review in November 2012. The focus of this meeting was on the availability of statistical data from administrative and survey sources for use in policy evaluations based on secondary analysis. In the Netherlands, Statistics Netherlands (CBS) and UWV (employee insurance agency) are probably the most important providers of these kinds of data in the field of labour market and social security. Not only the availability but indeed the accessibility of such data varies widely between member states. This influences the usability of these sources for policy development.
The 2012 meeting was a continuation of a peer review in 2011 on the usefulness of evidence-based evaluation for policy development.

Update economic impact SABMiller in Europe 2011 (ENG)
Regioplan and Ernst & Young jointly conducted a study on the economic impact of SABMiller in ten European countries. The study is an update of a report published in 2009. In addition to countries in the European Union the report also pays attention to the effects of its Russian operations. Due to various reasons such as the economic downturn, the economic impact of SABMiller declined slightly compared to 2009 when the study was conducted for the first time. However, with a total employment effect of 202,000 jobs the importance of this brewery for the European economy remained significant. In addition to economic effects, the study also pays attention to corporate responsibility and the importance of SABMiller breweries for suppliers in the regions in which they are located.
The Contribution made by Beer to the European Economy – Edition 2011
In the spring of 2011, Regioplan Policy Research and Ernst & Young jointly conducted for the fourth time, a study focusing on the economic impact of the production and sale of beer in Europe in the year 2010. The study encompasses the brewing sector in 31 European countries. However, consolidated data relate to the 27 Member States of the European Union.
Three different effects were considered in order to provide a complete picture of the economic impact of the brewing sector: effects for the brewing sector itself, effects for its suppliers and finally, effects on the retail and hospitality sector within the European Union. We measured the effects in three areas: employment, value-added and government revenues. For the calculations of the effects we used our in-house economic impact model, designed by Regioplan.
The study was commissioned by The Brewers of Europe.

The Contribution made by Beer to the European Union Economy – 2010 (ENG)
This study focuses on the economic impact of the brewing sector in the 27 European Union Member States in the year 2009. The report is the third edition after an edition in 2006 and 2009. To represent the economic impact of the brewing sector, we distinguished three different effects: (1) direct impact, (2) indirect impact, and (3) induced impact. The methodology used for estimating this economic impact on the European Union was developed by Regioplan. It is a model that can also be used in other sectors. The study was commissioned by The Brewers of Europe and conducted by Regioplan Policy Research and Ernst & Young Tax Advisors. Below you can find the complete report and a fact sheet.
